Hearing Loss in Children
Welcome
to Little Listeners, an early intervention
therapy center for children with hearing loss
who want to develop listening skills and use
spoken language to communicate. Hearing loss
affects the child’s ability to process
auditory information. Children with hearing
loss need to develop speech and language with
a specialist, specifically trained to recognize
the impact the child’s hearing loss has
on speech, language, and auditory development.
The Auditory-Verbal approach
Your
child may be being evaluated or recently implanted
with a cochlear implant due to a severe to
profound hearing loss. Using the Auditory-Verbal
approach for aural and auditory rehabilitation,
I’ll guide you in integrating listening
skills into your family’s daily routines. I’ll
show you how to develop your child’s
skills in hearing, speech, language, understanding,
and communication.
Listening
Environment In Your Home
You
will learn to create a listening environment
in your home, which incorporates the Auditory-Verbal
philosophy and techniques that promote listening
and clear natural speech and language. This
is a team approach and parents are active participants.
Sessions are one hour in length, once or twice
a week, depending on your child’s specific
needs. Together we will carefully monitor and
evaluate your child’s progress. Together
we will develop short-term goals and long-term
goals that are appropriate for your family
and your child. Accommodations will be made
for children with oral motor, auditory processing
or medical issues. Together we can help your
child use listening to communicate.
The degree, type,
or severity of the hearing loss should not deny
a child
the opportunity to use audition to learn spoken
language.
